Description of West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing, the official California State Dance, dates back to the 1940’s when it became a popular dance form in nightclubs and was preferred over other swing dances by Hollywood filmmakers. Period movie cameras were more limited than those of today so it was very difficult to capture the essence of swing dancing as the dancers kept revolving around each other in a circular fashion. So a version of the dance was developed so that the dancers would dance on a predictable line, called a slot, allowing for successful filming.

West Coast Swing is a bit more sultry and sexy than other swing dances, and it can become quite habit-forming. A variety of music styles lend themselves to West Coast Swing - blues and R&B, as well as some country, pop, and rock. Because of this you can have fun with this dance style in a wide variety of settings and venues. West Coast Swing differs from many other dances in that it allows the female the freedom to stylize her movements within the framework of the male lead, and at BodyGrooves we focus on the connection between partners that enables leading and following to happen easily.

You may choose to get quite serious about this dance, as others have, but here at BodyGrooves, we emphasize fun and learning to dance with people at all skill levels, rather than concentrating on finding "the good partners". Because of the lead-follow skills necessary for West Coast Swing, it is a true social dance in that each partner is a new experience and most dancers enjoy many different partners throughout a night of dancing. In your classes at BodyGrooves, you will master basic and intermediate moves, and learn the skills to create your own moves, all in an atmosphere of encouragement and friendship.
